This morning a 29 year old male fell while climbing the North Chimney Route on the East Face of Longs Peak within Rocky Mountain National Park. The report came into park dispatch around 9:30 a.m.
The roped climber reportedly fell 70 feet incurring sufficient injuries that he was unable to continue his climb. He was lowered to the base of the climb by his partner and another group of climbers who came to his assistance. Since his injuries prevented him for walking, park rangers were dispatched to the scene. They arrived at approximately 11:30 a.m. Rangers stabilized the patient and slowly moved him to a landing zone near Chasm Lake at the base of the East Face. Due to variable weather conditions in the area throughout the day, a helicopter was finally able to land and transport him off the mountain just after 3 p.m. this afternoon. He was flown to a Denver hospital for further evaluation and treatment. He never lost consciousness and his injuries were not life-threatening.
The injured parties name and hometown are not known at this time.
