At 4:45 p.m. on Monday, August 15, park rangers found the body of a 60-year-old male who fell approximately 300 feet near the Flattop Trail. The investigation is ongoing, but it appears the fall was intentional.
Park staff left the Bear Lake Trailhead this morning at 7:45 a.m. The recovery operations were postponed several times due to inclement weather. The recovery involved an approximate 300 foot technical raise in a gully with scree and loose rock. Over sixteen park staff were involved with the recovery. The manís body reached the Bear Lake Trailhead at 3:00 p.m.
The manís name and hometown will not be released until next of kin are notified. Due to the nature of this incident, no further information will be released on the investigation.
