We've had discussions of hiking uphill v. hiking downhill scattered around several threads. Apparently, there is now research that shows which direction you hike affects more than just your knees. Click here to read a news story suggesting that downhill hiking is actually better for diabetics.

You know, I think I need to conduct a study on the effects of Grand Lake ice cream on hiking endurance. I could team up with the professor and we could put some good use to some of that grant money his university gets for important studies like this. We may need some volunteers to increase the statistical validity of the results.

Yes, we would be doing something for the good of science. It must be known how our bodies use up the fat calories of GL ice cream.

It's all covered by the grant money. All we have to do is get ProfHall to sign off on the study proposal and it will sail right through the approval board.

Count me in, and my wife and son as well!

Such great use our money is put towards! And here I thought grant money was only being used for cancer research, or some sort of affordable gas substitute. Next thing, scientists will tell us the results of their 1 year, $10 million study on why water is wet.

Ciao

As a finance professor I don't go anywhere near human-subject research. You cannot BELIEVE the red tape involved in that kind of stuff...

...but in the interest of science, perhaps a "rate of metabolism/hiking duration/endurance" study could be set up. The list of variables to investigate...oh, the mind reels...

And, on the topic of the original post, I heard a bit on this study on NPR Monday or Tuesday morning...we need the lifts used in the study so we can get the greater benefits of downhill hiking!

I liked the comment on how it's hard to have all your hiking one direction or the other! For most of the hikes I've been on, what hikes up has got to hike back down!

Way to go Aaron. How did you do it? I am trying to lose between 50 to 80 lbs before the Rendevous.
