I would gladly train as much as possible to get a little bit better in shape

I would NOT recommend Lee's training methods. You might be better off looking at some other options...

(but I'm pretty sure thats the one that Glen's gonna use :D )

Amen! Wasted on the youth! Seems that I myself have used such training methods in the past, but can't remember exactly what I was training for. ohmy.gif Well, maybe I do remember a number of them. I'm just not a good enough writer, typeist to pass them on in the forum setting. huh.gif :D ;) " Number of them."---No pun intended! whistling.gif peace.gif whistling.gif five.gif whistling.gif ;)

Hi Guys!
Im really looking forward to this snowshoeing trip and to meeting you, that is if you really will allow me to come. Just to give you and idea of how it may be if you do, let me tell you about the last time I went snowshoeing.

My wife and I went snowshoeing near the Eldora Mountain resort near Nedarland. It was a beautiful day and the snow was deep. We hiked into the forest, just taking our time and enjoying ourselves. We passed some old mining camp and it was really cool. About 3 miles into the hike we came upon a partially frozen over creek at the bottom of a big steep hill. We slid down the hill to the creek and my wife asked "how are we gonna cross that?" I in my infinate wisdom said " Honey, just do as I as do". I spotted a thin Aspen tree, perfect for swinging out and jumping over the creek. I grabbed the Aspen and swung. I heard a crack. The Aspen had let me down, literaly. I landed on my back in the middle of the creek, partially submergeed. I looked up at my wife and she said, "You want me to do that??". I said, "this hike is just ended". We took off quick like a bunny to get back since I was soaking wet, I did have proper layers on luckily, so the only real bad part was that my feet we soaked and stayed that way. I found out I can snowshoe pretty quick when I need to. :) . I still have all my toes.

Hope you guys will still let me go. My wife Marian says she's in too. She wants to be there to keep an eye on me.

:)

It will be great to have you there Mountainlover. I am almost 100% sure I will be there. I'm not sure if my wife is coming just yet.
I too went snowshoeing one time. It was in RMNP in Feb 2003. There was a ton of snow that year. I went by myself even though I had never done it in the past. I did Bear Lake up to Dream Lake, then down to Glacier Gorge past Alberta Falls and onto Mill's Lake. It was an awesome experience as well as a great workout. I was getting pretty tired by the time I was shoeing up the trail between Glacier Gorge and Bear lake on the return. I did hike right across Bear Lake and Nymph Lake which was sort of sureal. Luckily the lakes were frozen solid so I did not fall in like you did. That sure would have put a bit of a damper on the fun. It was snowing like crazy when I did it so the mountains were not in view at all,but still beautiful nonetheless.
One thing I know next time I will insulate my food and drink. when I got to Mills lake last time and took a break my water was almost frozen solid and I ate a frozen bananna. I think the temp was in the teens by the time I reached Mills.

Mountainlover, that area around Eldora is awesome. Living in Boulder almost 20 years, we would hike out there all the time. Anyone who visits Boulder must check out the Eldora mountain trails. Eldora is about 20 miles west of Boulder, and you can get there going up Boulder Canyon and then through the small town of Nederland.

I too snowshoed ( and did some sledding) up around Bear lake and up the hiking trail toward the other lakes. It really is surreal. The trails that you have become so familiar with in the summer, take on a whole new personallity in Winter. I almost feel invinceable (but Im not, as the creek showed me so well) when snowshoeing there because you can leave the trail and take routes you wouldnt normally take. And the beauty is indescribable.

Well it looks like you guys might have me along so I cant wait!

Also I love the little town of Nedarland. Back in my younger days, I hitchhiked from my house in St Louis to visit a girlfriend in Boulder. She had some friends up in the extinct (I think) town of Carribou above Nedarland. It was in the summer but still pretty cool up there. Her friends lived in a small shack/cabin with a wood burning stove. We ate venison stew and slept outside under the stars at night. Great memories. Actully visited the grave yard of the town and all that was left of it were a few pieces of head stones. Apparently the town was wiped out at the turn of the century by disease (I dont know how true that is). Behind the shack down the hill was an abandoned mine which in spite of the "danger keep out" signs we explored a little bit (very little). Next to the shack was a barn and one of the guys told me a story of how he had to rescue his friend one winter when he saw his friend hanging off the side of the barn door for dear life like a flag blowing in the gale force winds. Nedarland is cool, there is a very famous recording studio up that way too. Joe Walsh (Rocky Mountain Way), The Beach boys, Badfinger and many others recorded there.

hahaha !! LMAO !!
It was a fairly simple schedule as I recall.....

get up
smoke a doobie or two
find something to eat and coffee
smoke a doobie or two
go driving around the park
smoke a doobie or two
smoke a doobie or two
find something to eat for lunch or dinner depending on how long we wandered
around smoking a doobie or two
Take a walk and smoke a doobie or two
smoke a doobie or two and have a beer or two, maybe some cheap wine
go to the bar
drink some beers
slip outside and smoke a doobie or two
drink some more beers and talk real smart to the girls in the bar
try to find the van
pass out in van

repeat as needed for as many days as required to acclimate and prepare for a serious hike or climb.
Nuttin' to it...........back when I was 19 or 20 anyways..... peace.gif :D yup.gif

Seriously I hope you have a great time. The Rockies are as breath taking in winter as summer if not more so. If you camp out in a tent when it's below zero you'll get some remarkable huge frost formations hanging from the inside of your tent by morning. They feel extremely exhilarating going down the back of your clothes when you try to get dressed in the morning. Been there, Done that !! caribou.gif

Did the same as a kid when we camped at Indian caves State Park, but being a kid I though it look neat and decided to touch it and it fell in my face. It got down to -6 that night.

Put me on the list as a slighty possibility. Is there a route defined yet? I like to look at maps :)
