QUOTE (CDeb @ Nov 3 2004, 07:13 PM)
Lucky for you the weather turned you around.  I cannot imagine attempting to negotiate past the Keyhole while stoned and living to tell about it.  It was difficult enough cold sober.

You may be right CDeb. Back then my friend Kevin and I had a lot more courage than sense. It amazes me that we survived some of the foolhardy stunts we pulled. They say that the Lord looks after fools and little children. I know which of those categories we fit. jester.gif jester.gif whistling.gif

We once scaled a rock face with no equipment using a crevice and working off of both sides of it. When we came out on top of the bluff and jumped to a tree overhanging the opposite side of the crevice to pull ourselves out we startled a climber that was rigging his equipment to rappel down the bluff. He couldn't believe that we'd come up the bluff from the bottom. We pointed out our car parked at the bottom and he just shook his head. We didn't use much good judgement at times. Blind Dumb Luck was apparently on our side. blink.gif blink.gif

Great story Lee. But it does remind me of something my wife and I saw when we lived in CO. It was in Eldorado Springs Canyon, just south of Boulder. We watched this guy shimmy up the side of a rock wall with no equipment, and it was dusk. We couldn't figure out how he did it or how he would get down. Believe me it was straight up. Those who have been to Eldorado Spings know what I am talking about. The next day, we heard there was a death in the Canyon. It was the same guy. We were saddened to hear it. Apparently, he tried to come back down the way he came up, and it was on the verge of total darkness.

Glad you and your friend made it through your "climb" OK.

hahahaha !!! I'd like to make a DVD but these days that trip would do me in. Not to mention the fact that I wouldn't have a clue where to get doobie ingredients any more. Thirty years ago....like Marvman said the DEA or one of those agencies would have had too much fun with the likes of us.
Glad you folks enjoyed it. I was considering a trip report from my ride to and around in RMNP last year but I figured my memories of that trip would be infinitely more entertaining. :D

Actually, I'm still interested in hearing about your ride last August. Having never gotten to ride around (or even to) Colorado, I would like to hear your take. And as you have already proven, your writing could make an afternoon nap sound interesting. You could also answer some questions, such as -

Why did you end up staying an extra day?
Where did you sleep while you were there, did you camp?
How does a bike handle with 7500 lbs. of stuff bungied to it?
Did you make it to Glen Haven for a cinnamon roll?
How do you deal with hot in Estes to cold at the top of Trail Ridge?
Did you make it over to Grand Lake for ice cream?
Do you crack the throttle just to make the car alarm on the Lincoln Navigators go off?

There, if you need any more ideas for direction, just drop me a note.

(and NO, a dog did NOT eat your report)

I'll try to get time to write up last years trip for ya, Marvman. Riding the park on a motorcycle is just awesome. Totally different being out in the elements than sitting in a car. Breathtaking !! B)
and to answer your questions:

Why did you end up staying an extra day? To ride Fall River Road.

Where did you sleep while you were there, did you camp? I stayed at the Budget Host Motel in Estes. $70/night and a clean cozy room with a fridge and microwave. Not the newest or a great view but it served my purposes just fine.

How does a bike handle with 7500 lbs. of stuff bungied to it? Not too bad. I didn't haul camping gear this year. I can actually get a tent, sleeping bag, self inflating air mattress, fold up cooler and the necessities on the bike though. I have what they call a T-Bag that mounts to the sissy bar and I position it on the passenger pad of the seat and use it for a backrest. It hauls all my clothes, leathers, spare pair of boots etc. I use a duffel bag that mounts on a small luggage rack to carry my camping gear. Used the luggage rack for a cooler this year. I had some friends that live in this area take my sleeping bag and a couple of other things to South Dakota for me and I motelled it out.

Did you make it to Glen Haven for a cinnamon roll? Nope ! Thought about it a couple of times though.

How do you deal with hot in Estes to cold at the top of Trail Ridge? I put on my motorcycle jacket when it's cold, you silly goose. I keep warm gloves and my jacket on the bike with me. It doesn't take much effort to bungie my jacket on and I keep lotsa stuff in my saddle bags.

Did you make it over to Grand Lake for ice cream? Nope, headed over there twice and got chased back across by threatening weather both times. Looked worse than it got but I hate riding down Trail Ridge Road in sleet and snow. I played that game two years ago when I rode out there.

Do you crack the throttle just to make the car alarm on the Lincoln Navigators go off? Heh, heh, heh ! whistling.gif Oh maybe !! whistling.gif thumb.gif

Darn, I came along to this forum 4 years too late. I was reading the story and said to myself "I smell a SCREENPLAY!" I figure Judd Apatow or Kevin Smith to write and direct. Not sure about casting yet...
