Right at the beginning of the trail, I saw something that made me know that this hike would be special.

Although the views of the high peaks were hidden by clouds (as they were most of the week we were there), and the sun wasn't in a the right spot for great photography, the view back toward Estes was still sweet.

My wife took my picture by this old dead tree.

Paul Bunyon's boot had a huge icicle hanging out of the hole in his sole. Someone needs to bring up a large roll of duct tape.

The privy near Gem Lake had a foot of snow around it. I suppose if you didn't have TP...

Most of Gem Lake was frozen, but near the "cliff" there was a spot of open water.

Here's a panorama of Gem Lake.

Icicles were hanging down from the mountain side and every minute or so, a bunch would break loose and clatter down to the trail. It was like nature's version of wind chimes.

On the way down we met a couple that had asked us to take their picture when we were at Sprague Lake earlier in the week. They were staying in a family member's cabin that had a poor heating system. He said it was 49 degrees in the cabin when they woke up. They returned the favor and took our picture.

It was a WONDERFUL hike!
