Your elk story reminds me of one of our returns from Moraine Park elk bugling. We were back on the "main drag" heading towards the Beaver Meadows entrance. It was pitch black dark, so we weren't going fast anyway; but at one point we rounded a curve and saw two people standing by the side of the road. (No car, just the people.) We slowed down even more, rounded the next curve - and there was a whole herd of elk standing right in the middle of the road! We had to wait awhile before proceeding, because they were quite content where they were; and we weren't really interested in disturbing them.
I'm glad your "elk encounter" had a happy ending!
