See if you can figure out why I took this picture while on my Cub Lake hike.

It wouldn't have anything to do with a snake, would it?

Ssssssssss. I have never seen a snake in RMNP either. No bears, no snakes. As you said yesterday, "hope springs eternal."

I saw snakes a couple of times this season around the Cub Lake and Fern Lake trails. I'd never seen a snake in the park before this year, and it was kind of cool.

There were actually several snakes around there. We actually saw them twice, at about the same point on the trail. As we were going up, we noticed a guy reaching for something by the side of the trail in a rocky/bushy area. When he straightened up, this is what he had.

The first picture was taken on the way back down. (Right after gsmatch nearly stepped on it. Difficult to say who was more startled, gsmatch or the snake.)

This year was our first time to see snakes as well. And would you know it was in the same area.

This was apparently the trip for new wildlife sightings. Not only did we see the bear and snakes, twice as we were driving through the park we saw an Albert's squirrel. In both cases it was in an area where we couldn't stop, so we didn't get a picture of either one.

Yep, snakes are alive and well in the park. On the Bridal Veil Falls hike last month we saw 3 snakes.

Nobody ever used to see snakes! At least not until Lori moved to Estes. Is she from the Slytherin House?

I have hiked RMNP for many years and never saw a snake until this past August. My wife and I were hiking down from Bear Lake to Hollowell Park. We were in a hurry because we were trying to beat a storm. I nearly stepped right on one that was in the middle of the trail. I let out a yell, scared my wife to death. I'll be honest. I'm like Indiana Jones. I don't like snakes. My problem is, when I see one, my feet kick into automatic so fast, I run in place for a while before I start moving away. I thought I read somewhere that snakes would not be found above 7,000 feet. What kind are they anyway?

Your description of your feet running in place is a funny mental picture. I think I do the same thing, or else just freeze in place and can't move at all.

There are no poisonous snakes in RMNP, but there are definitely an abundance of snakes in that portion of the park. I once saw two within minutes of each other on the Fern Lake trail near the trailhead, and it seems like a lot of people have seen them in the Fern Lake TH and Cub Lake vicinity.

I also saw one once right on the riverwalk in EP, and I screamed bloody murder. People were jumping up and looking out the windows of the shops and restaurants. Embarrassed my son to death.

Here's proof:
