It's now raining and has been for about an hour or so. (It's now 11.40) It's about 44 degrees. We were going to drive over Trail Ridge today, but obviously that's not going to happen, probably not until next summer!

We saw on the Estes webcam that it looked all rainy, and like a big storm was approaching. I wish we were there so much. But at least here in San Antonio, we are experiencing our first weekend where it feels like fall. It makes Rocky Mountainitis a little more bearable.

So... is Trail Ridge probably going to be closed for the rest of the year? My fiance and I are coming Friday. I hope we didn't just miss it!

I'm not sure, but you could try this website to check the status of the road: http://www.nps.gov/romo/visit/weather/road.html
I'm assuming it will likely be closed if we continue with this kind of weather, but I could be wrong.

We were just in the Park and it was snowing there, even though raining in town. There was a sign saying that Trail Ridge Road was closed "temporarily", so you never know, it may open again if the weather improves.

We were watching the weather forecasts very closely all day long yesterday, since we had to drive from Estes Park to Denver this morning to catch a 12:30 pm flight out today. It had already started sprinkling in Estes as we drove out of town, and it definitely looked like it was snowing in the upper elevations. I'll be very interested to find out how it all plays out.
As for Trail Ridge Road, the rangers we talked to expected this storm to close it for the season, but you never know.

This storm system looks to be intensifying to the south and east of the Denver area, leaving Boulder and Larimer counties with much less snow than the NWS was calling for. I was quite surprised to see them going with up to 24 inches in Estes and 18 in Boulder. Boulder is still sitting in rain and the snowline seems to be at 6500 feet and higher, at least that of which is sticking. Even there, it appears everything is on the light side. Don't have time right now, but a bit later, I'll explain the dynamics of this storm and why it appears the brunt of it will be south of the estes to boulder areas. This doesn't mean snow won't fall in estes or that heavy snowfall won't fall in the higher elevations. It just means this storm is not panning out to be a major fall snow storm, at least at this time (6:45 mountain time). Stay tuned though, I have seen storms like this stall and then re-intensify. I'll be curious to see if this ends Trail Ridge road.

Howdy all, for those of you in Estes this week and the Christmas weekend, what a whacky weather pattern you are in for. Frigid temperatures and snow only a few days are giving way to an unseasonably mild weather pattern. Current temperatures give a hint of what will be taking place. Temperatures at 6am Mountain Time this morning in Estes were 32 degrees. Temp in Ft Collins is 15, Boulder -4 and Denver 10. When an inversion like this takes place where the higher elevations are warmer than the lower elevations, this is a sign that the very cold air mass that has been in place is eroding. The jet stream is moving to the north of CO and mild air is sweeping in from the desert southwest. Temperatures may be pushing 50 on Christmas weekend in estes, if this weather pattern holds sway. The computer models are sure hinting this will be the case. One thing I am not seeing in any of the other forecasts out there is wind, but I have a feeling before this week is out, the front range will be seeing quite the chinook. If that does take place, it could get very windy in Estes some time this week. Just as an aside, to let you know how mild the air could be, I have Boulder possibly pushing 65 or a bit higher this weekend, if the computer models don't change their minds. If this happens, it would set all time record highs there. Very strange weather indeed. For those of you travelling to Estes or CO this weekend, I'll send out another update if all this changes.
