As usual, in July, there were tons of Elk grazing between Forest Canyon and the Rock Cut. That's what made it especally funny when we were driving up Trail Ridge and on the curve just before Hidden Valley there was a HUGE traffic jam. Cars stopped in the middle of the road and parking on the road for several hundred yards on both sides of the curve. When we finally were able to squeeze through we saw that the people had stopped for ONE elk. The poor guy was lying under a tree trying to catch a nap and this huge crowd was taking pictures of him. Emily looked at the crowd and said "They must be new"! About an hour later on the way back down, the crowd was still there. I hope that poor Elk got his nap.

Remember, we were all noobies at one time. I remember our first elk and the lengths I went to on TRR to get a picture of it. I felt absolutely foolish a day later when they were everywhere.

Well I still stop for Elk Jams too, but I try to pull off the road instead of parking in the middle of it for a photo shoot.

Tee hee. .. .maybe they weren't even newbies. . . I've taken so many elk photos, but I've yet to capture "the" perfect one. . .you know. . .the one that should grace the cover of National Geographic. Every year, I still go for that one. . .maybe he thought "this is IT" "this is THE one!" Although taking a nap under the tree doesn't seem quite like "it". . .but ya never know what appeals to some people.
It is funny tho to see people making such a big deal out of every elk they see when there's probably one munching on grass right outside their cabin door at that very moment.
