DeLeo's is a "real" deli with great sandwiches and take-out, located in front of the historic Park Theater. Hopefully you'll get to schmoooze with Tom the owner, known as the Deli Lama.
DeLeo's is a real deli in the heart of Estes Park. It is located right up front in the old Park Theater building. There are only a few tables, but that's ok. You can get your stuff to go and enjoy great food anywhere (say, under a tree somewhere in the park!). Hopefully, Tom will be there...he's a true character, and has taken the name "Deli Lama" if that tells you anything.
* Atmosphere-- 3 1/2 stars. The place is "cozy" which means small. But, the many pictures up on the wall sent by past customers extolling the place are fun. There was a recently added (July 4th date) Sponge Bob kite with signatures by the creators! It could be a bit better, but again, this ain't a chain location Subway...so I give them the extra 1/2 star.
* Service-- 4 stars. The two young men working the afternoon we got lunch here (a little past the regular lunch hour) where friendly and got our food right out to us. They answered questions we had, but didn't try to be our best friends - a pet peeve of mine at restaurants!
* Food-- 4 1/2 stars. As I said, REAL deli food. Pastrami, salami, pesto, olives, and so on! I saw the deli featured on FoodTV in '03, on the show "The Best of..." on an episode about the best food at national parks. I had to find it...and I did in October '03, and came back with everyone this time. I had a real Italian hero, on the menu called the "Tony Soprano" or such (definitely included the "Soprano" part), with three meats, provelone cheese, a nice oil and vinegar kind of spicy dressing, and so on. Yummy. Everyone got something different, and everyone got (1) plenty, and (2) good stuff. There are many, many choices, and you can even order special deli stuff by the pound if you are staying in EP somewhere that makes sense.
* Overall-- 4 stars. I'm stingy with all 5 stars, but this one comes close, since the quality of the food is so high, and the (again) quirkiness of the place is a lot of fun. I try never to eat at any place I could eat at home, and this singular location easily fills the bill.
You really need to try this one on your next visit.
