The backcountry office informed me that the park will require the use of canisters in 2007 on the western as well as eastern side of the park.

There appears to be a couple versions. Anyone have any helpful notes from the field, as I've always hung my stuff..... caribou.gif

Bear Vault. Comes in two sizes. Available through REI. Click the link on this forum.

Why Bear Bault? 1) it is see through which helps you find what you want. 2) Requires no tools for opening. 3) the large size fits perfectly in the bottom of my pack (horizontally). 4) You can sit on it. Using a tree for a backrest, it's a nice place to sit and eat supper.

Perfect! So the bear can see what he's after, and he won't need any special tools to open it up and get John's food. Glad to see they're looking out for the animals. tongue_ss.gif

Sounds like a good old SNL Emily Littela setup:

What's all this talk about beer canisters? hmm?

Jane: Emily, I think they meant Bear Cannisters.

Emily: Oh. Never Mind.

Big Bend NP has bear boxes installed at all of it's backcountry sites within black bear territory. I realize RMNP has a lot more designated sites, but they also have a lot more visitors, therefore more revenue. Why can't they put in bear boxes at the designated backcountry sites instead of requiring a canister?

Given my choice, I'd rather pack the Bear Vault than use something that's permanently stationed in the backcountry. The ones I've seen are small, dirty, and coated with spilled and spoiled food on the inside. Why not have bear poles at the more popular sites? Throw up a 20-foot pole with a pulley at the top and wrap some aluminum around the base so nothing can scramble up. Works in Canada, eh?

This may be why RMNP does not put up perminant boxes or poles...

# Camp must be established within 15' of the metal arrowhead and post which marks the site.
