Last night I watched an interesting show on the Discovery channel about park rangers. It was interesting to see some of the things they have to "police" in the parks. Some things I had never thought of like botanical poaching, animal poaching, drug running, and not to mention the rescue duties, and such. It's easy to forget how hard these fine people work to maintain the parks! Mega-props to the park rangers!!! five.gif

It is easy to take them for granted.

I have a deep admiration for the park rangers. For one thing they have to tolerate a lot of us goofy tourists all summer long. They need to know how to care for the plants and animals and when to leave things to nature or intercede. The knowledge and education required for those positions is very impressive. Back in my younger days that's what I intended to become. I got married and went other directions but I still sometimes wonder how things would have been if I'd pursued my early aspirations. yup.gif

You would most likely be one of the coolest rangers! You'd look cool cruising around on a motorcycle through the park as a ranger!

You guys should see the statistics of just how hard it is to get a full-time ranger position. The best way to get a job with the NPS at all is to go on the law-enforcement ranger side of things. It amazes me.

I was originally turned on to RMNP by a park ranger. This lucky guy taught college biology during the year and then spent his summer's 'rangering' in RMNP. Now THAT'S a great gig!

BTW, rather dark and forboding looking on top of Long's right now. The weatherchannel is saying snow in Estes Park tomorrow and Wednesday. I sure hope TRR is open by Thursday.

Check out EstesLive.com. It's run by our newest member, weatherbe aka Greg Berman. He does the forecasts himself.

I was in DC this past weekend, and at the monuments (though not other buildings, etc.) the flags were at half-mast for the ranger killed in Hawaii last week. I asked at the WWII memorial about the why, and had a nice conversation with a young woman ranger about our website and all the park news Aaron always helps us keep up with.

By the way, there was a young man ranger leading a tour (just ask, that's what they're there for) of folks entering as I was ready to leave. They were going frame by frame down the bronze relief "pictures" that act as the entrance to the memorial area...you could tell he really liked his job, and loved WWII history. He wasn't saying "and here you see yada yada yada..." but was rather telling stories about what was happening in the pictures, why that was an important representation of the war, etc. with lots of enthusiasm and intelligence. The crowd was hanging on his words...

Thank you, rangers, for keeping the parks for all of us to share and enjoy.

I thought this would be a good topic to bump since the death of a find RMNP ranger. Also here is a link to a video that gives a tiny glimpse into the daily life of rangers...
