Swiftcurrent Lodge is located on CO Hwy 66 about three miles southwest of downtown Estes Park on the Big Thompson River. It is a relatively small property but with a good variety of lodging in a good location. See www.swiftcurrentlodge.com for details. We've stayed twice - September 2000 and August 2002.

Cleanliness (3.5 Stars) - Above average. The units are all clean enough, spotless even. Most of their units are old, so they don't have that "five-star hotel feel."

Type of accomodations (4 stars) - They offer small cottages, hotel-style lodge rooms, a couple of large units with full kitchens and a couple with kitchenettes. Good variety.

Friendlyness of staff (4.5 stars) - The family that runs the place lives on site and they work hard to keep the place clean and quiet. They're really nice people ready to answer questions and give advice. They worked with us on a late check-in time as well.

Knowledgeable staff (4.5 stars) - See above

Amenities (3 stars) - We don't usually pay too much attention here as we are there to see RMNP, so we don't spend too much time at the lodge. The hot tub is really nice. There's a playground for the kids. The riverside patios are perfect. No restaurant or laundry facilities on site.

Location (5 stars) - This is the best part. Outside of Estes Park, so it's quiet, yet close enough to be convenient to town. The property is situated near the old entrance to RMNP, so it's about a 15-minute walk to Moraine Park. The Big Thompson River runs within 20 feet of the cabins, so the setting is fabulously serene.

Rates (4 stars) - We rented a one-bed kitchenette unit for about $85 (in 2002) which we thought pretty reasonable for a touristy area in peak season.

Activities (5 stars) - As stated, good hiking from property (Moraine Park, Eagle Mtn., etc). It's not unusual to wake up with elk in the flower beds. A quick drive to the Beaver Meadows RMNP entrance or to downtown Estes for other activities. Adjacent to Dunraven Inn.

Overall rating (4 stars) - If you are in Estes Park to visit RMNP, the location is great. If you want to spend some quiet time reading a book next to the river, the Big Thompson was about 10 feet from the back door of our unit. It may not be suitable for some, but it was just about perfect for our needs.
