For the first time in recorded history, 4 large groups (about 1000 birds each) of sandhill cranes spent the winter in the area... No one knows why, although it may be related to the drought down in Texas. The regular visitors are starting to arrive... lots of birds here now.. about a week ahead of schedule.. Lots of strange goings-on in the bird world...

By the time they leave in early April, more than half a million cranes will have "staged" in this 50 mile corridor along the Platte River.

That is a sight I would love to see. Thanks for sharing your pictures. It is hard to imagine so many birds in one place.

My grandparents lived in Kearney, and they loved taking us to see the sandhill cranes (as a kid I was boooored). Your pictures bring back good memories.
