The wind was howling as I drove into Estes this morning and the spindrifts coming off the peaks told the same story but the wind was much calmer in the parking lot than I expected. There was the occasional strong gust that roared though but it was nearly calm most of the time. It looked like it would be a good day to stay in the woods and out of the wind.
The snow base is still not deep or solid enough for good skiing yet but but there is plenty for snowshoeing. The base has turned to TG snow a bit which weakened the base enough that I was sinking up to my knees a lot but JD and I enjoyed the great workout.
We stopped for a short break in a good view spot and took a picture of a spindrift coming off Thatchtop Mtn:
The ice on the lake was nearly snow free today and I tried to capture some more good ice photos.
We took the route past Beard Falls on the way down and there were some icicles looking like glass daggers:
