It felt like home but it also felt like it had been a long time since I'd been home but it was great to be back on snowshoes and breaking trail.
The wind was howling as I drove into Estes this morning and the spindrifts coming off the peaks told the same story but the wind was much calmer in the parking lot than I expected. There was the occasional strong gust that roared though but it was nearly calm most of the time. It looked like it would be a good day to stay in the woods and out of the wind.
The snow base is still not deep or solid enough for good skiing yet but but there is plenty for snowshoeing. The base has turned to TG snow a bit which weakened the base enough that I was sinking up to my knees a lot but JD and I enjoyed the great workout.
We stopped for a short break in a good view spot and took a picture of a spindrift coming off Thatchtop Mtn:

The ice on the lake was nearly snow free today and I tried to capture some more good ice photos.

We took the route past Beard Falls on the way down and there were some icicles looking like glass daggers:

Nice. Linda and I went to a local forest preserve for a hike today in forty-five degree temps and we got to hike in the mud. We are really missing the park.

Love the first one with the snow blowing off the top, and your ice pictures are great. Glad you were able to get back out there and take pictures for us.

On a side note -- Ed, I haven't seen any sign of the impending Bear Lake Road construction up there. There's not even any equipment staged in the Park'n'Ride lot (or anywhere else I can see). (Unless, on a topical note, it's been drifted over by the wind...)

Projects like this usually involve quite a bit of preparation, and if they were going to start any time soon I would expect to see some indication of it. Of course, Stomp is a few months off yet, but maybe you'll not be impeded by it. HPH
