As reported by the Denver Post, a fire broke out today at the historic St. Malo's Retreat Center on Highway 7 south of Estes Park, Colorado. High winds and a lack of water on the scene hampered efforts to put out the blaze, but it has now been brought under control. While the atrium, conference center and kitchen areas of the main building were extensively damaged, a firewall protected the guest rooms in the south wing. The published report does not mention any damage to St. Catherine's Chapel.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will conduct an investigation, though there is no suggestion of foul play. Power was out at the facility when the fire started, and fireplaces were in use; but it is too early to know if that played any part in starting the fire.

While the Retreat Center is not actually in Rocky Mountain National Park, Mt. Meeker provides a stunning background for the stonework St. Catherine's Chapel, making it a frequently photographed scene.
