Today we leave for Denver after picking up the kiddies from school. We'll drive a few hours tonight, all day tomorrow, and a few on thursday a.m. It's about 18 hours from Detroit to Denver where we're attending a wedding on Friday. Since my wife is matron of honor and my kids are both in the wedding we have to make the rehearsal on thursday. Then it's off to E.P. and Glacier Lodge saturday evening for three days in the park. Woo hoo!

Seems like most people on the east side of the country fly to get to the park. Wonder if anyone else drives as far as we do to get to RMNP? With warm weather clothes, cold weather clothes, wedding clothes and hiking gear it just seemed better to drive all our stuff to Colorado and we also wouldn't have to rent a car.

I'll report in when we get back!

Have fun at the wedding, but have a great time in the park. Hope you have a safe trip. I like to drive, to see other parts of the countryside, makes you appreciate what a beautiful country we have. Also makes you appreciate the mountains even more.

You gotta view alot of corn on the way to Denver!

BTW, for anyone else in the park, our vehicle is the one with the "RMNPforums" sticker on the back of the car-top carrier.

What a great combo of events for you---wedding & RMNP. I hope you have a great time. I live about 80 miles north of Detroit. I have been to the Park 6 times in the last 5 years. I have driven each time. I often combine accounting/tax seminars between here and there. I do enjoy the drive when I have time and vary the routes but I am not adverse to flying if the time window is too small to drive. yup.gif

I think that Greeneyes and hubby hold the forum record for most miles driven to get to the park. I think they come out of New York or New Jersey or New Hampster or one of those other "New" states on the right coast.

And I whine about 9-10 hours....

"We're off like a flock of mud turtles" is what my parents said each time we left for a big vacation when I was growing up. I've continued the tradition with my own kids. Mud turtles don't flock and I guess they're not very fast but each trip starts with one small step (or mile)!

I'm heading off to get the kids from school in a few minutes and then we're off. I've managed to fit everything in the car except my wife's suitcase. More work to do! ciao.gif

From 'poke's link:

Mud turtles are small semi-terrestrial turtles

That gave me pause...I guess that's more common that being extra-terrestrial turtles!
