Day 3 - Saturday September 24, 2011

Let me just say this right out of the gate… this day was, without question, the highlight of our trip. Bar none. Why? Because ever since I told Ally about Ed when I began working on the STOMP shirts last year, she had been asking me, "When will we get to meet Igloo Ed?" Every time we'd talk about Colorado (which, let's face it, is pretty much constantly at this point) she'd ask, "When will we get to meet Igloo Ed?" Whenever one of us would wear a STOMP shirt, "When will we get to meet Igloo Ed?" Whenever we… well, I think you get the idea. And, as it turns out, today was the day. Finally!

The plan for the morning was to meet up with Ed, Mark and Ski Bud Frank at Bear Lake at 6:00, head up to Zone Lake for sunrise, make our way to Joyce's Pond, then hook up with the Fire Trail and go our separate ways at the Loch/Mills junction.

We all arrived at pretty much the exact same time, and I recognized the guy in the car next to us immediately. "Hey, there's Mark!" We shook hands, introduced ourselves, got all geared up and were soon approached by Ed, who had a big smile and a hug all ready for Ally. So there we were, not five minutes in and Ed had already made my day.

We promptly headed out and I could tell right off the bat that all of my concerns about Ally launching into an early morning whine-a-thon were all for nothing. It's amazing how the addition of a few more folks that AREN'T her parents can completely change her attitude. She kept right up, and in fact was hoofing along in front of Ed at one point. Whodathunkit?

In no time at all, we were at Zone Lake. We stopped and Ed and I whipped out the tripods and started framing up for sunrise. It was another totally cloudless scene, but the winds were completely calm, the water still, and the reflections mirror-perfect. As we waited around for sunrise, the girls visited with Mark and Frank while Ed and I strolled around the shore. I got a great history lesson and a nice introductory primer to Zone Lake 101. It was almost as if Ed had been here before or something…

Igloo Ed. In the Zone.

A little pre-dawn glow over Zone Lake.

After bagging a few photos, we headed on down the trail to Joyce's Pond. Ally continued to impress, never missing a step and followed Ed's lead like a champ.

Posted Image

Posted Image

She was doing so well in fact, that each time we came to a stream crossing, my concern had less to do with her safety and more to do with me NOT slipping and falling into the drink and getting shown up by my own kid.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Before we knew it, we were at Joyce's Pond. Another hidden gem. I don't know who this Joyce is, but she should be proud.

Posted Image

Before too long, we were on the Fire Trail and making our way to the junction. We stopped for a quick group photo before seeing Ed, Mark and Frank off as they set out toward Half Mountain. All in all, an AWESOME first Ed-venture for us. I look forward to many more in the future.

After seeing the Half Mountain gang off on their way to the top, the girls and I decided to make our way to Mills Lake. We made pretty good time, and made sure to stop along the way to take a few obligatory give-grandma-another-heart-attack pics.

Posted Image

Posted Image

And I don't know whether to chalk it up to the early start, hunger or the fact that we no longer had our friendly hiking partners along with us, but just as we were approaching Mills, my whine detectors started getting a few readings off you-know-who. Nevertheless, she toughed it out and we were soon checking out the rocky shoreline and loving life again.

I even managed to block Longs Peak. WITH THIS THUMB.

After a nice relaxing breakfast, we made our way around to Jewel and spent a good long while just soaking it all in.

Of all the views to choose from and the endless expanse of scenic goodness surrounding us, Jen seemed most fascinated by this particular patch of moss for some reason. She insisted I take a picture of it for her, and I suppose I'd be remiss if I didn't share it.

We soon started our way back down, Ally's energy level waxing and waning like so many phases of the moon. Fortunately, we made frequent stops along the way to look up toward Half Mountain to see if we could spot the guys. Not likely, but Ally kept wanting to see if she could spot "Tiny Ed" waaaaaay up there on the mountain.

Now that we were privy (no John, not THAT kind) to the location of one end of the Fire Trail, we decided to jump back on when we got back to the junction and take it back down. The views from the rock shelves along the way were just awesome. The fall colors were really starting to come along nicely as well. Quite a noticeable change in just a few short days.

Not too long after this, we stopped for a quick rest and I snapped a few pictures of the girls.

This was also the point of our hike where we ran into Bill & Diane, whom I recognized immediately, en route to Sky Pond to catch themselves a nap. We were so busy chatting that I didn't think to get a picture, but if you look at that last picture really close…

We soon emerged from the Fire Trail near the super-secret rock that marks the super-secret jumping off point from the not-so-super-secret main trail. (The super-secret rock's appearance has been disguised to protect its super-secret identity.)

Before long, we were back at the car and headed into town to get Ally a couple more well-deserved Trail Tags. What a trooper. No sooner than we'd started back down Bear Lake Road, she was zonked out and sawing logs.

We grabbed some lunch, collected our trail tags and kicked back at the cabin for a bit until it was time to head to the Hidden Valley GTG. And that was the icing on the cake of an already perfect day in the park. And a fitting way to wrap up another whirlwind RMNP trip. We can't WAIT until March. :yup:

I know where I stand now. Ally had a chance to meet me at McDonalds and elected to take a nap. (sigh) Very impressed with the Zone Lake picture, but the clear winners are the blocks of Longs Peak, the most hugemongous mountain in RMNP, using only your THUMB. I am humbled, my friend. Amazing report.

Thanks, all! My family is always a lot more good-lookin' when I'm not in the picture bringing the average down.

Thanks! And don't you worry. You're in excellent standing. She wants to meet you too. And just to make sure, I've kept your Christmas card strategically located at kiddo-level on the fridge. Subliminal advertising at work.
