August 30, 2011--I always like to take a hike on the West Side and this year I picked out Blue Lake in the Never Summer Range (Bowen Mountain Trail). Honestly, it was not a good choice. The trail was very muddy for long stretches and the destination lacked the wow factor. But I had a good time because of the great conversations I had with my friend Jeff, and even a so-so hike is better than almost anything non-hiking related. On the way we drove up Old Fall River Road and stopped at Chasm Falls.
Here's Jeff at the trailhead.
You can really see the results of the beetle epidemic in the first quarter mile of this hike.
Farther in the trees are nice and green.
The highlight of this trail are the wildflowers. Indian Paintbrush was everywhere.
Lots of Fireweed, too.
Pretty Bellflower
We encountered a grouse.

Finally we arrived at Blue Lake. It was green. False advertising.
