There's a reason we call our local newspaper the Clarion-Liar instead of the Clarion-Ledger. The truth is probably somewhere in between.
Even if the man was truly defending himself - and I'm ready to give him the benefit of the doubt now that no charges have been filed - it bears pointing out (no pun intended) that this incident appears to have started with one act of carelessness in leaving a window open. Your brain should never go on vacation just because your body did.

That first article was pretty much a piece of garbage. Lots of inflammatory language, and all the info came from one government employee who obviously has an axe to grind.
There has been a LOT of bear activity this year in town. I don't know what has changed this year, but they seem to be very active and very hungry. I had personally only seen one bear in the last five years, and I've had close encounters with two of them now in the last two months.

I have heard that rangers and a lot of others say you don,t need bear spray, and I myself have NEVER felt a need in RMNP, but has that changed this year and / or for whatever reason. For sure reasonable people do not want to and will not use unless ABSOLUTELY needed. "Normal" avoidance would be best. This post is just a thought given Al's post. More information from those with more experience and knowledge is welcome. I personally hope to hear it is not needed.
Thanks!
Fox
p.s. I personally do not feel it is needed unless you experts out their say otherwise!

I haven't heard of any bears in our area being predatory or even aggressive. The two that I encountered were both just looking for garbage to eat, and weren't really interested in me at all (thankfully!). I never have carried spray in Rocky, and probably won't unless things change.
When I was in the Tetons/Yellowstone in July we most definitely carried it though. I'm not real fond of grizzlies.

Thanks for reply Al! I can't see reason for spray Rocky in yet either!
