A Nebraska man, former police officer and marine, left groceries out in his cabin and left windows open as well. He left his cabin and came back to find a bear inside his cabin. The bear was frightened and tried to leave. The man chased it down and shot it many times and killed it.

It says he went for a few drinks in the evening -- so we have a drunk with a gun chasing a bear and shooting. That is wrong on so many levels.

Couldn't agree more, Becky.

We can only hope that in the process of this act of madness, he lost control of his bodily functions and soiled himself.

Unbelievable. Sorry I have to get on my soap box about the headline.

As a retired Marine of 21 years, and current Police Officer, the headline should have read "Drunken A$$hole with gun kills bear"

I think there is a reason he is a "former" marine.... and "former" police officer.. His conduct displayed is unacceptable to both professions.

There are too many fine people who serve this country and it frustrates me to see headlines like this.

No, on to the story... absolutely a shame and the man should be prosecuted to the fullest..

Sorry if my $$ violates the post content, but this mans conduct reflects neither the corps values or conduct of the Marines or Police Officers.

What an idiot, and also what NWA395 called him. And his neighbor was stupid, too, to defend the man.

Absolutely disgraceful! I hope they punish him to the full extent of the law. The neighbor is just as big an idiot as the nutjob who shot the bear.

So in the story. Channel 9 used identifiers.. Nebraska, Marine, Police Officer, Channel 9 does this type of reporting often. Some years ago, they reported when a patient decided to commit suicide by jumping out of the back of a moving ambulance.. they reported.. "It was unknown if the patient was pushed".. seriously.. I never watch 9 news any more..

Now on to the crux of the story..
"A person, a human, can come in your house and it's legal to shoot him. But a bear comes in to your house and it's not legal to shoot them? You have to protect your family," Gene Williams said.

What is not quoted.. if the perpetrator is outside of your house and running away, he/she is no longer a threat and you cannot shoot them.. I think they should throw the book at the guy.. I am not at all concerned how hard this is for him.. I am concerned that the public's perception of Marines, Police or even people "tourists" from other states are portrayed..

Rant done!

Those two stories don't match up, one says the bear was running away and the other says the bear was aggressively approaching.
With the way the first article is written... It smacks of inflammatory statements and I tend to discredit any writer that writes that way.

I think just about every tv stations reports are skeptical. I have heard things on the St. Louis stations that I know wasn't right. No serious or bad stuff just ordinary stuff that was wrong. It seems they always have to say something about a person that has nothing to do with the story wether it is right or wrong. I am sure they will make a big deal about the gun thing also. a lot of news reports make things worse than they are.

It also says the bear was eating out of his fridge instead of eating the stuff he left out on his counter. Don't know what the truth is about aggressive or running away, but still very much a shame that a bear died. A bear that would not attack anyone unless they or their cubs felt threatened.

Truly unfortunate for the bear. I say let's shoot the news reporters. Who knows what really happened?
