This was the beginning of the boys' second day. They had spent the night at July. Joshua was feeling a little better, and had eaten breakfast. They packed up and headed out.

Looks as if they headed UP!

About this time Joshua wasn't feeling very well again... so Daniel had to go slowly (that means lots of pictures).

Looks as if they had beautiful views.

Again, if anyone would like to play "name that mountain" or "name that location" ... be my guest!

I'm sure I should know this lake... but I don't.

Daniel said there were 5 or 6 baby ptarmigans around this mama. I spotted one in this picture. Can you spot any more?

Emerald Lake Overlook....

And that was it for their attempt at backpacking. Daniel has his heart set on trying the John Muir Trail in California. Joshua had wanted to do it with him, but is a little cautious because of his experience this time. I think if he has a day or two to get used to elevation before heading out... or even a day or two hiking at lower elevation, he would be fine. You never know.

I'm sure he'll be fine next time... AMS is no respecter of persons. It can hit anyone at anytime. It happened to me one year while going up Flattop also. We were supposed to go over to the July campsite and down the N. Inlet Trail, and I wasn't feeling very well when we started out... when we made it to the Emerald Lake overlook I started feeling really cruddy. I stopped for a bit, walked slowly, but it wouldn't let up. I ended up going back down to the car and driving down to Loveland to a friend's house and crashed out! I don't remember much of anything that night except for eating a piece of pizza, but the next day I felt fine, and headed back to the park...

Thanks for all the pics and story... Joshua will do fine next time!! :yup:

I'm exhausted just looking at all the ground the boys covered. Such gorgeous scenery!

For most, the John Muir Trail is a once in a life time experience, I wouldn't pass it up due to an experience like this.

Those pictures are so beautiful. Sure wish I was younger and could try this hike. Ken's sister and her husband did it from Bear Lake to Grand Lake in a day and loved it. I'll have to enjoy it through the eyes of others. Sure wish it would have been better for Joshua.
