Cub TH to Fern TH, that is. We woke up in the morning to a dawn chorus. There were at least two coyotes yipping on the hillside beside the cabin. I posted this in the coyote thread, but here they are again. They kept this up for at least 30 minutes.

Coyote Yipping

So, we headed to the Cub Lake TH planning on just doing a quick in and out. We were greeted by this little chippie. He obviously wanted his picture taken since he was posing so nicely.

A little further down the trail we saw this Mule Deer. I always wonder when I see what appears to be a scar what happened to cause it.

Posted Image

She browsed for a while and then headed on up the hill. We saw a patch of Wood Lilies. These have become one of my favorites.

Posted Image

I have no idea what kind of berries these are, but I liked the mix is greens and textures.

Posted Image

We saw several Spreading Dogbane plants along the trail. Very pretty delicate flowers, but has terrible side effects.

Posted Image

One of them near Cub Lake had attracted a swallowtail.

Posted Image

As usual there were chippies at the lake. This one had grabbed an apple that someone had dropped and he didn't want anyone else to get it.

Posted Image

His buddy came back to do some begging.

Posted Image

Some people (my mom) just have to tease the chippies

Chippie Begging

There were a few waterliles blooming at the lake and I had to get at least one picture of the view. I found when we got down I hadn't take very many shots of the lake. I think since I visit there almost every year, I just didn't think of it.

After a quick discussion we decided to head on down to Fern Lake TH. As we continued down the trail, we met several people coming the other way and visited. We didn't think to ask where they were headed until we were pretty far down the trail. We wish we had because almost everyone we asked THOUGHT they were heading to Fern Falls. If you've even gone from Fern Lake trail to Cub Lake, you know it is pretty much uphill. We felt bad that we had probably also passed people heading to the wrong destination.

As passed a nice little patch of Twinflowers.

In this close-up you can see why they are called Twinflowers.

There are several streams and small waterfalls along the trail.

Near one of the streams we saw a pretty group of columbines.

Posted Image

We got to the Pool and come to find out we had just missed Rick and Monica. The Pool was running very full.

Posted Image

I love the sound of the water.

There were lots of Groundsels blooming around The Pool area.

We saw a purple Mariposa Lily.

And a White Checkermallow.

Overall it was a nice, restful hike. We went into town after we had cleaned up and visited Erik, where we once again just missed Monica and Rick. But we did touch bases and they came to the cabin with a tasty pie and we had a great visit.

I love the pictures you capture on a hike. Not only do you photograph the flowers like a pro you capture them with butterflies and the like.
I love your pictures, Becky!
This was a great time to really slow down and enjoy the flowers!

Excellent report! Those berries are possibly cherry choke berries that are not yet ripe.

Since I've taken that trail only in the fall, I miss the opportunity to see the pretty wildflowers. I appreciate seeing them through your eyes.

The first time we did that hike we came from the Fern Lake TH to Cub Lake. There was a lot of uphill on that one. Next time we did Cub Lake TH to Fern Lake TH. It is a great hike. Ususally do it in the fall when the leaves are golden - but no flowers. Great pictures!

Beautiful pictures!

Another possibility on the berries would be baneberries. See my picture here for comparison.

After looking at your pictures, I am considering a macro lens for my camera.

Believe it or not, I didn't have my macro lens on this hike. These were all take with the telephoto zoomed into flowers
