What is the weather typically like the first part of September? Do we need to be as concerned about afternoon thunderstorms if hiking up high as during the summer months?

It kind of depends on the year but in general the afternoon storms start decreasing in late August until the snow flies. Early to mid Sept is the some of the best weather of the year for non-snow worshippers IMHO. Freezing nights and snow squalls are a possibility at med to higher elevations or you might have mid August weather just depends.

You still have to be aware of the afternoon thunderstorms, they just become less frequent the further you get into September.

Thanks for the info! This will be a re-scheduled vacation. My husband and I were supposed to be in RMNP in June but I crashed my bike and we had to reschedule. We have been there once in late September but normally vacation in the summer months. Sounds like we may have picked a good time to come. Thanks again.

We were there last September around Labor day for 4 nights and only saw rain once, of course it was while we were on a hike, with not a lot of rain gear (always have some) but it dried up by the time we got back.
Nights were wonderful to sleep.
