Had a great hike today to Chasm Lake. The weather couldn't have been better. The trail was pretty much snow-free, except for the crossing after Chasm Junction. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Thanks, it's good to see the snow crossing conditions. I doubt that will all melt out this summer.

Always like pictures of Long's at the junction. Good shots. Looks like there is still a ton of snow going to Chasm from the junction. Hope nobody slips!

Beautiful! I always get a kick out of seeing hikers wearing shorts in the snow. It just seems so out of place that the temps are that warm yet the snow is still there! Great pictures.

Approx. how long was that snowfield? Did you feel the trail was broken in enough that you felt comfortable crossing it? I see things like that & I think "ugh". I guess snowfield crossing is my
"thing" kind of like Sandy O & Scott's stream crossings.

Great pics though! Glad you had perfect weather. That always makes it better!

Great report.

Kristin,
Piece of cake. We can all three master our fears this summer.

The snowfield took about 2 to 3 minutes to cross. It was maybe 200 yards long- hard to tell. We felt way more secure on the trip over than the trip back since the conditions got slushier. we were nervous, but it wasn't too bad. We had Yak-trax on which helped.

Though it doesn't really apply here, this reminds me of a concept that can get people in trouble if they ignore it. It's not a successful adventure until you return safely. (What immediately comes to mind is the guy who went up Longs with pretty much nothing but what he was wearing and came back in a body bag.) I've seen people climbing out to places (with difficulty) where anybody could see they were going to have a whole lot more trouble getting back. It reminds me of a corollary to the above concept - the most important thing to take with you when you go hiking is your brain.

Good for you for being properly prepared! If everybody was as sensible as you, the rangers would have a whole lot less work to do!
