We had a soccer coach staying with us this week, and one of her other host families took her up to RMNP a couple of weeks ago. I don't think she realized how big RMNP is - she was trying to figure out where they'd gone when they went for a hike then but was only able to give me a few clues.
  • They passed the Stanley Hotel on the way into the park (I don't know how closely they passed it - but I think that rules out Highway 7)
  • They didn't drive very far into the park before they got to their trailhead
  • The parking lot was fairly small, probably only a dozen cars
  • The hike was short enough that they felt comfortable taking kids along, but long enough that the kids pooped out and the coach and the kids' dad hiked further along
  • The hike was long enough that they didn't make it to the rock that looks like a beaver

Did they go through a toll booth on the way to the park? If not, I'm thinking they were Lumpy Ridge area.

You may be right about that - I was thinking maybe Gem Lake but I couldn't remember anything about a rock shaped like a beaver. Owls, boots, sure - but no beaver. And I couldn't imagine kids not being able to make it to Gem Lake - we did the loop last year (the kids were 4 and 7 then) and they were able to do it with no problem. But I'm not sure why someone would pick that as a display hike (i.e., if you only have one day in RMNP) - there are a lot of short and easy that aren't so deserty.

When we did the Gem Lake Hike with our kids they realy struggled with getting to Gem Lake. Well the younger two did anyway. If we had not kept pushing them we would not have made it. My thoughts were Gem Lake or something in that area too.

It certainly sounds like Gem Lake. Don't know about the rock that looks like a beaver.
