Sorry for the picture quality but we were standing on the Fern Lake Trail about 50ft. or less from him (I think I see some antler buds when I zoom in but for all I know it could be a female) and I didn't want to spook him. I've seen a number of stories about them being here on the east side but was really surprised to run into one this close. It looks like he may be working the area between the Fern Lake and Cub Lake trails based on lydia's siting as well.
We had actually gone on a moose hunt yesterday to try a see some moose on the west side of the park. We didn't see a lot but did see a mother and her calf. I'm putting in the distance photo to show the current conditions of the trees on the west side:
The Colorado River is flooding in the meadow area from run off, so a lot of the moose may be in different areas right now to avoid the swift waters. The park service has clear cut about 30' of trees on both sides of TRR to prevent them from falling onto the road. I'm sure the rest will start to fall or become victims of a fire in the near future. It sure makes for a sad look as you travel the roads. I wouldn't be surprised if more moose started to move to the east side since it looks like a lot of the willows they feed on are becoming stripped, so there going to have to find new food sources.
