Isn't he slated to finish out the week camping in the North Fork area near Lake Husted? That's even higher, no?

Right now, moisture in the form of snow sounds awfully nice to me, but that's because it's been over 100 every day and not a drop of rain in weeks.

Ditto!

I don't know, I just know he was starting out at Sandbeach and was worried about the leftover snow on the ground. I don't think he was expecting more from the sky. After all he has been through in the last month, a little snow isn't going to dampen his enthusiasm.

Not one bit. At this point, I would't be surprised if the snow simply parted itself before him. :thumb:

If memory serves me correctly, John is heading to Sandbeach tomorrow and will climb Chiefs Head on Wed.
By looking at the Glacier Basin cam, the new snow has melted where the old snow had already melted. It appears the ground is warm enough to melt the snow. The snow will stick to the snow drifts and snow fields that still remain. In checking the weather forecast, it looks as if they will have fair weather throughout their backcountry trip and the snow that accumulates on the remaining snow will get a bit harder and they will probably be able to walk in it easily enough although it does make it more work.
There is a good chance they will make the summit as they are both strong enough and the hike on Tombstone should have helped with the acclimating.

Well, if they are climbing Chiefshead today, the skies are without a single cloud and temps of 80 are forecast for the plains. Go John!

Well, he seems to be back now! I hope the snow didn't part on the way down, makes glissading rather tough on the bum.

John has buns of steel. (Clark Griswold's saucer sled land speed record doesn't stand a chance.)

Ed, I am SO THANKFUL for what you taught me (and Jay) about hiking on snow. We got to practice LOTS on our hikes to Joe Mills and Chiefs Head. We had a blast cold buns and all.

You are very welcome Friend. I hope it made the choice between traveling rock or snow clear and you were able to use the snow to your advantage.
I'm glad for what Jay learnt when he started sliding a little to fast and he wasn't using his staff just right. I think he learnt everything in a nano second at the point.

There was a point when we were heading up toward Mt. Orton that the snow was very hard and icy and beyond our ability. Because of my experience with you I knew what the end of my limits are and we went back down and found another way. At other times we kick stepped our way up some pretty steep slopes and made it just fine. Sunday was a great refresher course for me and Jay got his learner's permit. :) There was so much snow this year and I'm thankful that we were well trained.

Nice, I'm very glad to hear you got on something over your head and backed off. And found another way!
Climb on, Friend!
