Some good timely info rolling out here.
Whoa! Based on that latest information, I think you and family should stick to the Elkhorn Trail or DH (Donut Haus) Trail. :wink2:

Still love that DH trail! I think some of the landmarks may have changed name over time though.

Any of the WB hiles to the lakes - you will need snow shoes for about half the way. I went to Thunder last Thursday, the 2nd of June, and the partrol cabin was completely covered with snow, absent about 3 inches of the roof. That means there is still 10 ft of snow there.

Aaron, I would add Steep mountain to your list. No snow!! and beautiful views and fairly short hike. Bill and I will be climbing it on Sunday

You've read my mind, Diane. That was one of the first substitutions I made while poring over the map the other night. Looks like a good'n. :thumb:

What is the route up Steep Mountain? I can't see a trail on the map.
Would you leave out of Hollowell park or Cub Lake trailhead?

There is no trail up the mountain. From the Hollowell Park parking lot, follow the trail towards the mountain for a little more than 1/4mile. Should reach a junction with the Tuxedo Hollowell Trail. From there, choose your own route to the top. A reasonable route is up the middle towards the stand of aspens. As you approach them, skirt around their right side. You should be able to avoid any thick bushwhacking, but you can't avoid steepness. Be aware, there are two summits; the one on the right (north) is the true, highest summit.

An alternative is to turn left at the junction and follow the trail a short distance. Then pick a place to leave the trail and climb the lower, south summit first. Then do some route finding to make your way over to the north summit.

It's a very nice hike with great summit views. Do your best not to loosen up rocks and terrain to limit erosion.
