I found this article just now. It referenced the '97 mountain lion killing of a boy that ran ahead of his parents in RMNP. Here are some tips from that article if you happen to encounter a mountain lion...

Don’t run. Like a house cat that attacks a moving ball of yarn, mountain lions attack whatever excites them and investigate the object later.

Carry a walking stick or rocks in your pockets to use for self-defense in the event of an attack.

Hike in pairs and make noise to reduce the chance of surprising a mountain lion.

If there are children, keep them in front of the adults and within sight.

Don’t allow pets to roam free.

If you’re on a bike, get off and walk. It is also good to put the bike between you and the lion or raise the bike over your head.

Make yourself look big. This can be done by raising your arms or lifting a coat over your head.

If attacked, fight back aggressively and stay on your feet.

My take on keep them in front and in sight! - - -((((( I can see a long way. ))))) In certain terrain keep the children in sight ((( and ))) fairly close. It is possible to see the child and still be far away enough to - - - see - - - the child taken. Should they be taken you would have a real hard time catching a mountain lion running with a small enough child, perhaps, up hill, or in certain really rough terrain, etc.

Fox :smile1: :wink2: :peace:

Most parents would keep them "reasonably" close but REAL close might be prudent in certain terrain! - My :2cents:

:peace:

Thanks for the article Aaron!

Good point, Fox. I'd keep them a lot closer than just "in sight."
