Longs Peak campground to close?

There is a proposal in the very early stages which would close the Longs Peak campground and turn it into more parking for Colorado's most popular 14'er. The loss of the 26 campsites could be picked up in the Meeker Park campground if that is also expanded.

I have pretty strong feelings that this should not be done. One, the mountain is already sooo crowded, and two, the folks who arrive after the current parking lot is full, are usually arriving too late for a safe climb of the mountain anyway.

That's the same thoughts that crossed my mind as well. From that article it does sound like they're eager to get this done though.

Good point. I agree it probably isn't a great idea. I wonder, have they thought about expanding shuttle bus service to that area?

Ok, I just read the article and they are considering that option, but say it might put too much strain on the wilderness by increased visitation.
