RMNP forums always gets to view my photos first. Then, on occasion, they are published elsewhere.

Happy New Year's Eve!

The 12/31/10 Estes Park News generously gave me the front page and pages 20-21 for my bobcat family photos.

It's interesting how that sitting shot, because there's nothing for scale, looks a lot like someone's kitty. But then you notice the ear tufts and the ruff around the face, and gradually "kitty" takes on a wilder and wilder look. Even if you could get close, I doubt that attempting to pet would be smart. Absolutely beautiful captures. Makes me want to reach out a scratch them behind the ear.

The images were captured well after sunset in the last light of the day. These wildcats are nocturnal with amazing night vision. I did use a tripod and cranked up the ISO speed to ISO 1000 for the last few shots.

And, of course, I kept shooting after sunset, because my night vision is pretty good, too, in the dusk light. But, even with high ISO speed, the diminishing light conditions prevented me from freezing the action at the end. That said, I like the last shot I took (below). To me, this really has the feel of a stalking tiger at night. 4:53 PM MST on 12/23/10. That was 23 minutes after sunset, so the shutter speed was only 1/25s.

So very very wonderful. They are such elusive creatures normally. Glad you could capture this for us.

That is one beautiful cat. And you captured him so well in his habitat. You were so very lucky to get to observe him in action. Thank you for sharing such wonderful experiences with us.
