Whoa! That is one big cat! Would this sighting be more apt to happen in the winter rather than in the summer or fall?

It's also nice to have friends and neighbors alert you to great wildlife sightings for you to photograph.

Year round resident, but easier to spot when the leaves have fallen off the vegetation. Also eats squirrels and mice, in addition to rabbits/hares. The smaller rodents are hibernating or tolerating winter underground. The bobcat has to roam further to find prey in the winter.

Amazing pics Richard!

Do they ever venture out on the eastern plains? Lynda swears she saw a cat too big to be domestic eating on a deer carcus our German Shepard had dragged up in the yard. Nebraska Game and Parks notes a confirmed lion sighting about 25 miles from us but never heard much about Bobcats in this area.

Bobcat range map. Somewhere between 750,000 to 1,000,000 in the wild. Pretty good chance the cat Lynda saw was a bobcat.

Mountain Lion Range map. About 30,000 in the western US.

So, the wide range of these big cats means they could easily be expanding beyond, as their population grows. As a matter of fact, a mountain lion was killed in Iowa about a year ago, which is an area definitely not shown as ML range. When I lived in Iowa (near Davenport), I never saw a bobcat or a ML, but there were occasional reports of sightings, in addition to moose and black bear sightings. On the front range of the Rockies, there are reported to be 3000 mountain lions. A researcher from the CDOW with a radio receiver in my backyard told me there were 8 MLs within three miles of my house. I've never seen a ML on the EP side of the divide, but I hear them during mating season and see the evidence of a lot of muley kills. My sense is the bobcats are less numerous in the RMNP area. But, in general, bobcats are much more numerous in North America.

Fantastic photos of a real beauty. Must be great to have neighbors who act as spotters!
Looks like he/she didn't mind you and your camera one bit.

By the way---where has your shop moved to????

We moved closer to Elkhorn Ave. Alpenglow Images & Accents is now located at 131 Virginia Dr. (Between Carroll Dermody's barbershop and Dahkota Jewelry). We just completed the move, so our signage is not there, yet. But, sometime in January, our store name will be on the canopy. The retail space we just moved into is twice as large and in a better traffic pattern. Thanks for asking.
