I don't why I was surprised to discover that Magpies are carnivorous, but I was. We saw this one in June with what appears to be a mouse or vole.

I am not sure either, but Magpies look like they are in the same family as crows and ravens and they are carnivorous.

It is a great picture, too.

Family Corvidae ...a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs and nutcrackers. The common English names used are corvids (more technically) or the crow family (more informally), and there are over 120 species.

The natural diet of many corvid species is omnivorous, consisting of invertebrates, nestlings, small mammals, berries, fruits, seeds, and carrion.
