In September a lot of people gather in the park in the early evening to watch all the elk activity. It seems every year it gets more and more crowded with cars parked along both sides of the road and people lined up to get a close up glimpse of the elk herds. Since I don't like crowds very much, I was looking for something to do in a more relaxing environment. When Richard posted his pictures of the beavers near Fishcreek Road, I decided it would be interesting to see them. The first time we went, there were maybe 8-10 cars pulled over on the side of the road. There was even a film crew from the German Discovery channel shooting footage of the beavers. We watched the beavers for about an hour until it got too dark to see anything.

Later we learned there was another beaver den a little farther up the road near an excavation company's site. The evening we went there, we were the only ones watching one single beaver gracefully swimming around.

After watching the lone beaver for a while, we went back to the other beaver colony. This time there were only about 6 people quietly watching the beavers. Quite a bit of activity was taking place this particular evening. I saw 2 adults and 4 juveniles in various states of activity--swimming, eating, grooming, and roaming around. Here are a few shots showing what we saw.

Here is one of the adults who was on the opposite side of the pond. Even with a tripod, the shot was still at 1/3 second and unfortunately the picture isn't really sharp. However, I wanted to include this one because it shows the beaver's large tail.

Check out the work done on this tree by the beavers.

I think this shot of the little guy munching on his supper is my favorite.

I really enjoyed spending time watching the beavers on this trip. Thanks, Richard, for pointing this out to us.

I always thought beavers were harder to catch in action than that. This is really cool and something I'd like to check out sometime. Great photos!

How cool. I don't know if I've ever seen a beaver in the wild.
