Lora wanted to spend a night camping at the Boulderfield. Allen did not. What to do, what to do? How about Lora backpacking and Allen doing some trail running in his new shoes followed by an hour with a massage therapist? Sounds like a plan!

Monica and Rick were with us during the Jim's Grove shortcut part of our trek to the Boulderfield. Mike and Staci decided not to take the shortcut. We all arrived at where the shortcut ends at the same time, less distance, but no savings in time because of our packs and the steep trail. Here's Lora near that spot.

The next morning we got up and readied ourselves for the trek to the summit of Longs. Allen was slow to arrive as he didn't leave the trailhead until 4 a.m. I suggested that we'd better wait but Lora kept saying that he walks slow and duck-like and that it could be noon or later so we ought to go on without him. To stall for time I took pictures including this one of Lora enjoying the alpenglow on Longs.

Allen got there just before Lora said she wasn't going to wait a second longer. I was with Rick and Monica but Ed, Lora, and Allen weren't far behind. Here they are on the Ledges. Lora is taking a picture. Allen is praying for a swift and merciful death.

Seriously, Allen has a fear of heights as many people do, and this hike was the bravest thing he has ever done except for telling Lora she couldn't spend more money on hiking gear. Courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is going forward in spite of your fears. Allen is a very courageous guy.

On the Narrows we came across a couple of turds and a white sock with a brown stain which was obviously used for wiping. Why the pooper didn't flick it off the trail I don't know. What I do know is that no dogs or bears venture out onto the Narrows. This was obviously human. And Allen, bless his heart, stepped in it. He stepped in HUMAN. Have you ever mowed the lawn and stepped in dog poo without knowing it, but the smell follows you until you finally check the bottom of your shoe? That's what happened to Allen on the Narrows. He noticed that his boot had lost traction, and that Ed was keeping his distance. Once discovered he wiped it on a rock. Someone's handhold. Here they are making their way across the Narrows.

Lora got her nickname in college when her roommate was also named Lora. Hector seemed like a good way to tell them apart. Strider named himself after the Lord of the Rings character who became king and got a hot elf chick. Here they are ascending with Ed.

Finally the Homestretch. Lora is near the summit.

This was your best report ever. I'm not afraid of streams anymore. Now I'm afraid of stepping in crap.

Really. The narrows? Could he/she have picked any worse spot?

I'm not one to accuse people but I couldn't help but notice that Iceberg was only wearing one sock on the summit. :jester:

I was wondering when the poop incident was going to make it into a report! Poor Allen/Strider...

Again, John, you've told a good story, and taken us along on the adventure in yet another, slightly different way. Thanks!

Oh John, funny stuff!!! It must of been one of those "oh crap" moments! Seriously, no privacy, using your sock = desperation.

I LOVE the pictures, all of them and the ones of the narrows describe the climb more than words can every express.

Very cool!

:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: You crack me up!

The poo was seriously disgusting. I didn't know Allen had stepped in it until he told the story later. Considering that I followed him most of the time... ewwww!

Those are some awesome pictures. I love the alpenglow on Long's -- and that picture of the narrows is amazing!!!! Well. . . . the poo story is pretty disgusting, but I have to say that at the point in the hike when I was so exhausted, I didn't think I could even talk, much less belly laugh, I found myself doing just that, and still laugh as I remember Allen relaying the story to us on the way back. Laughter really is the best medicine, so perhaps that was actually what was on the bottom of your shoes. . . . medicine :)

Another great report and pictures!
I've been staying tuned for this one.
John cracks me up too! Of course some events he told just a little differently. Like the fact that it was John who wanted to take off and have Lora join us without Allen.
I heard the poo story at the Sat. gtg and for some reason I thought it was big Al not Allen who had the up close and gross personal encounter.
I have a very similar picture of Allen not feeling so well but I haven't dared put it here or on facebook.
Anyway, Lora and Allen are the best! They were a huge encouragement to me and I'm so glad we got know them!

Another great one John. I love the photo looking back at the narrows. It was great meeting both Allen and Lora as well.

We saw the poop and the sock. We just couldn't believe someone would do that. It was pretty gross. I would have hated to step in that.

Oh, my goodness! My sides are hurting from laughing so hard. I'm sure it wasn't very funny for Allen at the time, but, John, the way you tell the tale is a riot.

These reports showing the human interest side of the Longs climb are priceless. I'm enjoying them very much.

Great report! So, Longs evidently scared the crap out of someone! Poor Strider, can't imaging having the smell follow you the rest of the way.
