We may be heading to Bierstadt from Bear on Thursday. Nothing for sure but a big probably. I'll keep ya posted.

(I'm definitely, positively undecided.)
Oh, that sounds fun. Unfortunately, we'll be driving that day and won't be there in time. Bummer!

Bierstadt is a good first hike, especially if you are new to snowshoeing. I like going up to Emerald, you can always turn back at Dream if you find it too much. Those trails are usually so packed down that you could probably do them in boots, but being packed down makes it easier to get a feel for the snowshoes. If you have never seen Alberta Falls frozen over, it is really beautiful. I also like the hike to Mills as a good warmup hike.

Only things I have to remind myself to watch for on snowshoes is, don't back up and do not step on your snowshoe. Both actions almost guarantee time in the snow, like this:

So how does Friday work? Does a group go up to "help" on the igloo(s) and then come back?

Otherwise my intention would be to go to Mills on Friday if anyone is interested in going with me. I stop for photographs, gasp for breath, and won't be in a race.

I LOVE Mills, it's my all time favorite hike, and I would love to see it in snow. I'd like to go with you Qbert, and maybe Hector and her crew and others can join us. I think the only ones who go up on Friday to Hiayaha are the ones who are going to spend the night. I guess anyone could, but I'm saving that destination for Saturday.

And Marsha, I forgot that you already know how to snowshoe, so you and Ken can help show me how on Thursday.

Any warm-up hikes would be appreciated. Bierstadt on Thursday and Mills on Friday sounds great. I know we are going to need some practice time in those shoes. The excitement is building...!

Also, I just want to thank Kristin for showing us how to fall on our faces. And Mark, of course, for his part in that. :hifive:

We are staying with a friend in Greeley on Wednesday night, but we hope to get into the park early on Thursday. Bierstadt from Bear was actually a hike I thought would be a good warmup so we'll watch to see what transpires with that. I definitely want to see Alberta in the frozen state. Bruce and Alisa (our crew) will be in late Thursday night, so we'll see what they are up for, but Mills would be fun. I'm getting very excited about this trip. Please, weather, cooperate for those of us driving from Iowa! I had to laugh at Mark's comment about backing up (and the pic, too). I remember the first time I did that and since I snowshoed before Ken did, I REALLY laughed when he did it, and then I helped him up, of course.

One of the great things about RMNP this time of year is that the "start at sunrise" thing doesn't really factor in during the week and crowds aren't a factor. We met up with Janine and Brian around 9am and it was a wonderful experience. If it helps we can start later morning, Marsha.

Yes, later morning would be wonderful. I no longer have to get up early since I retired, and so I don't!! Amazing how quickly I dropped that habit.

I love it! Can't wait to plant my face even more this time. I'm bringing Flat Sandy as well so it'll be raucous good frolicking fun! Count me in on any other group hikes. Mister Ice is flying out Thursday night & he'll be able to participate on Friday & Saturday. Anybody want to get wild with me and do Flattop or Twin Sisters? Mr. Zemmin? You still owe me a hike if I remember correctly.

Well, Ed's been very busy since last July and hasn't had much time to help with the Stomp planning or even post trip reports for that matter. It's a good thing though but I am finally able to come up for air. I'd imagine I'm going to be completely caught up by the time the Stomp rolls around.
I've been reading this thread since the beginning and it had looked like there were going to be a lot of people staying in the igloos. I had concerns about building that many igloos.
It now looks like there will be less people staying the night than last year so there shouldn't be any problems at all having sleeping arrangements for everyone.
The other obstacle we need to address is who leads the group up the trail.
I'll be going up Thursday and staying until I come down Sat. for a visit at the intown get together and then head back up to camp on a moonlit stroll.
Who is capable of leading? There is Tom's GPS track of the route.

We love the idea of Bear to Bierstadt, Mills and frozen Alberta Falls.
I love the idea of not having to do a sunrise start!
I'm getting pretty excited, too. Winter is getting pretty depressing around here, very few days are sunny, many days the roads are slick and dangerous.

JP Kole is not going to be able to do it?
