Staci (Renate1) and I love Napoleon Dynamite so we've been forum friends for a long time. But it wasn't until this trip that we got to meet in person. At the Hidden Valley get-together Staci (here next to Laurie, Ed's wife) showed me her victory pose. Like me, they were camping the whole trip.

We met at Longs Peak Trailhead on Thursday morning and headed up the trail with the gang. Mike is a great storyteller and a lot of fun. Here he is with Hector near the spot where we stopped for lunch.

These two filtered more water than I did at the Boulderfield for the Dayhikers. They have servant's hearts and were a big asset to the Camp Cookie team.

Posted Image

After we filtered water (more than 10 gallons!) we had supper together as the sun was going down. Rick practiced his blocking skills and nearly knocked Staci out of this shot.

The next morning, Staci and Mike headed up toward the Keyhole a little before I did. I got this shot of them celebrating their progress.

Posted Image

When I got to the Keyhole they were waiting. The wind was really blowing which made this spot kind of fun but also a little scary.

Mike was feeling a little dizzy (which is NOT good for the traverse across the Ledges). After spending a little time at the Keyhole, they decided to head down. Six others in our forum family didn't make it to the summit of Longs, but I say what matters is that they tried. Not everyone can handle the altitude and the exposure. Not everyone has the physcial stamina to get all the way to the top. Sometimes we just have an off-day. But the Keyhole is a very worthy destination in itself, and I salute those who gave it their best.

I love these words from Irene Gooter who said: "You can live on bland food so as to avoid an ulcer. You can drink no tea or coffee or other stimulants in the name of health, and go to bed early, and stay away from anything exciting, and avoid all controversial subjects so as not to give offense, mind your own business, and avoid involvement in other people's problems, spend money only on necessities, and save all you can. You can do all of that and still fall and break your neck in the bathtub--AND IT WOULD SERVE YOU RIGHT." :jester:

So Mike and Staci, I take my hat off to you for going for it. I'm really glad I got to know you better and that we became closer friends. Or as Napoleon would say, "So, we're pretty much friends by now, right?"

That was a great report John. I never did meet Staci even at the gtg. Sorry about that, but thanks much for the water Staci & Mike, it came in handy. Congrats on the keyhole.

Great report, John! Staci and Mike are amazing! Staci filtered water like a mad woman. Both are genuinely nice people, and I'm so happy to have spent time with them.

Thanks for the pics and report John. I would gladly play tetherball with you anytime lol!

Was happy to help with the water filtering - that was a task for a team.

Was great meeting everyone and was so happy to all those who accomplished their goals. Can't wait to try it again next year with my son.

John I love how you are doing your trip reports on this adventure .. truly great. We met Mike and Staci1 last fall at black lake but it was great to get to spend more time with them this time around.

Jen (and I) is still appreciative of the Snickers bars in the boulderfield!!!!!!!!!!!!

John, are you doing a little character sketch report of all the participants in this adventure? I love these first two. Almost makes up for not being able to be there.

junkie,

I am not surprised she had a snack for Jen, remember that Staci had cookies and snacks last year when we got to Black Lake after our hike to Solitude with Ed. She is great.

Up at the Keyhole, Staci literally took her pack off her back and offered it to me to use, along with all of her water. I didn't take her up on it because I knew I'd end up carrying Allen's pack... but WOW! Talk about kindness and generosity! They filtered water for me and had it waiting in my tent when I got back to the Boulderfield. Thanks, Staci & Mike!
