It has been a somber year on Long's this year.

Tragic. I feel sorry for the family, and for the park rangers who witnessed the fall. Horrifying.

Yes, I saw the rescue helicopter several times today. Gave me pause. I'm sure it wasn't one of the non-technical climbers we would know. Falling 800' is equivalent to about 66 building stories.

It is a sobering event.... again.

But I am a technical climber, and I know many of my friends were planning climbs up there to take advantage of the stable weather pattern we've had before the weekend crowds.

BTW, the fall took place from "Broadway" a fairly spacious ledge that marks the bottom of the Diamond and the start of the technical climbing, barely 1/3 of the way up the total climb.

After Longs we were hiking down with L Smith. We saw the helicopter go towards Chasm Lake and come back out with what looked like a "bundle" We weren't sure at the time what happened. When we were at the Boulder Field earlier, Lori mentioned that there were climbers on the diamond because she heard one of them yelling. Don't know if something happened at that time.

I didn't mean any disrespect. I mourn the death of anyone on Long's or anywhere.

Just read the article. It was around 1pm that Lori heard the yelling so that was not the fall, but climbers were definitely still on the Diamond at that time. The helicopter that we saw was at about 2:10 so that was the helicopter that took the man's body from the that area.

Here's a little more information:

It was apparently a 26 year old from Broomfield doing a technical climb.

Oh my, an 800 foot fall! I know that it was probably only a matter of seconds but what a terrifying last few seconds of life!

Sounds like he was solo-aiding the Dunn-Westbay route (difficulty 5.10) on the Diamond when the rock gave way 100-200 feet up on the route. He then fell to Broadway and then down the North Chimney. This is from the conversation over at Mountain Project.

Things like this always make me so sad, but knowing that someone fell to his death at the same time we were trekking up our own climb on a different route to that summit makes it hurt in a different way. I am so grieved for his family and the friends who were climbing with him.
