First of all, let me say that I am the mother of two sons that survived their teen years and are now in their late twenties. They weren't perfect, either. Boys know at a very early age that even small rocks hurt - because they throw them at each other. And a 15 year old that kicks a 100 pound rock loose into an area that he just climbed up from is well aware that other people might be down there - remember, his bus was parked next to hers. He didn't know for sure that it would hit anyone, but he surely knew it was possible - and he didn't care. He dismissed the danger because it was going to be fun to watch it crash. I'm pretty sure he was caught because another someone else saw it and realized it was wrong and turned him in. Two different people, with two different value systems making two different decisions. I do think it is a matter for the courts, if only to make sure if he does something similarly reckless again, he won't get off easy for a first offense. My gut tells me someone else witnessed this event and thought what he did was wrong. I agree with them and don't think it should be ignored.

Good points, Paula. You're right, there so little that's made it out as far as facts/details. Even the size of the rock he kicked is always a different size depending on where you read or who you listen to.

I hope there is something more behind this story to justify taking this kid to court.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think this should have gone to a court. This was a very tragic accident, with no intention to hurt anyone. I am glad to see the charges dropped. Others can chime in, and I will respect all opinions. It's a tragedy no matter how you shape it, but there are just way too many folks that should be prosecuted for crimes they meant to commit and had the intention to harm. That is what the courts should be dealing with.

Just my 2 cents!

Take care,
Weather :bee:
