Fox I also noticed that Jim was wearing jeans the first time I watched the dvd. Made me wonder what he thinks of folks he has to rescue who are all decked out in RIE, NorthFace, Patagonia...

Speaking of North Face, Here's a funny

Is the "Rest Spot at Alpine Brook" the "Lightening Bridge"? That seems farther than 3/4 mile.

I don't know, Mr. Jinks. Just quoting from the book. Here's another one:

"Good Photograph Spots
Treeline, just as you see Longs Peak
Sunrise, Alpine Glow (a must)
Chasm Junction
Just before the Boulderfield as Longs Peak comes into view
Boulderfield
Keyhole
Narrows (look back)
Home Stretch (look down)
Summit (all around)" Mike Donahue, The Longs Peak Experience and Trail Guide

That's some good info John.
For those that know my pace, I *LEAVE* the parking lot at 4:00 and am generally close to or at Granite Pass for sunrise. And generally, I climb it this time of year as far as sunrise time.

I've done Long's three times each time leaving at 5:00 am, early August time frame. The last time we were up in four and down in four finishing before 1:00 pm. As we waited for Scott to finish his hike, we talked to the people coming back to the trail head and asked where they had hiked and when they left. The one pair of gentlemen that sticks in my mind left at 1:00 am. They made it to the Keyhole. They saw us on the way up and down, as we blew by them (their words). I asked what they thought went wrong. Lack of sleep was the response. I said didn't they think they could have done better if they'd slept in and left at 5:00. One said that's what his wife said. Sometimes wives do know best.

"Remember the childhood days of being totally awake and filled with the rich pleasures of living fully consumed in the excitement, discovery and adventure of each moment? How the success of the day was measured by the number of hours filled with the growing warmth of exhilaration of being alive? Climbing Longs Peak gives each of us the opportunity to once again experience this great feeling, to benefit from the fresh, rejuvenating and stimulating rewards of a beautiful day consumed in the enjoyment and unfolding of each moment, of each step, of each new experience along the way. This is climbing and this is probably the strongest, most important reason to climb Longs Peak. An adventure takes place when we put ourselves into a situation where we do not know and cannot control the exact results of our undertakings. In the big picture, life itself should be an adventure: unfortunately, modern living has greatly removed the excitement of adventure from our daily lives. Our days tend to be routine and planned out with very little of the unknown thrown in. Not so on Longs Peak. Longs Peak is a spectacular adventure than unfolds majestically before us as we move upwards." Mike Donahue, The Longs Peak Experience and Trail Guide

I'm just not sure we could do the 4 hours up part. It took us 2+ hours to get to Chasm. I would much rather stay in bed as long as I could. I just want to be sure to make it to the Boulder field before everyone is long gone. Part of the problem is not knowing how long that takes.

Actually ~2 hrs to Chasm is pretty quick. If you get to Chasm Jct in 2hrs, you should be at the Keyhole in 4, and on the summit in 5 1/2 or so. One problem with leaving at 1 or 2 am is that your body clock is thinking you should be asleep, so your performance is pretty low until 5am or so usually.

Another bit of advice - DON'T overload your packs. I can summit in less than 2 1/2 hrs from the trailhead with my usual minimalist running gear, but if you strap a 50lb pack on me it takes 5-6 hrs (plus I feel like I'm going to die the entire time). Don't skimp on clothing and such, but don't haul anything up that you don't absolutely have to either.
