Erik & Richard, your pictures are so amazing. Sad, but moving and incredibly composed and well done. I think they will mean alot to Estes Park forever. We had a historic building burn down at the Pearl Brewery complex in San Antonio that our company owns and is developing. It was very sad like this Estes Park fire, and they are now talking to artists about doing a huge oil painting from one of the photos that will be displayed in the new building after it goes up.

I am just now seeing all this. I am so sad. Bless the firemen and emergency workers. I just can't believe the photos taken by Erik and Richard. It appears to be a huge fire. So sorry for the shop owners and the apartment dwellers affected by this.

According to the video titled Fire Destroys Historic Building at http://www.thedenver...145/detail.html the store owners have said they would reopen if the mall owner rebuilds. The report also said that, being aware of the age of the building and the potential fire hazard, they were well insured. Of course, I'm sure it's still a huge blow that mere money can't soften.

I remember shopping in the Intrigue when I was a child; I still have a couple of things I've bought there through the years. There are two photographs hanging over gsmatch's piano that came from that mall. I have so many memories from that building. . . .

Wonder what it's like today? Erik?? Richard?? I pray the wind blew away the smoke and smell, and life can begin the slow process of healing and rebuilding.

Clear skies. Quiet winds. Authorities have fenced off the area. Seems calm, compared to yesterday. Snow in the forecast for tonight. We will open our store for normal business at 10am. We consider ourselves lucky to be able to continue our business activities. We can imagine the grief and stress being experienced by those who will have a long business interruption.

The city sent out an email to business owners last night, as follows:
Dear Business Owner:

All business owners may currently access their businesses WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS:

BUSINESSES OWNERS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF ELKHORN FROM THE WHEEL BAR WEST TO MORAINE AVENUE MUST:

1. Have an escort before entering their business (someone will be downtown around the clock to escort you)

2. All food stores in this section must have approval of the health department before opening again because the power has been off for so long. The health department will be here in the morning.

3. We anticipate power being restored to this section mid-day tomorrow at the earliest.

Other general updates of interest:

1. Elkhorn Avenue between Riverside and Moraine Avenue will be closed through the night and will hopefully open tomorrow.

2. Moraine Avenue should open tonight.

3. A fence perimeter is being installed tonight to block access from around Rocky Mountain Traders to Moraine and around the building to the back parking lot.

4. The Wheel Bar parking lot will most likely remain closed for use as a staging area.

5. Personnel will be on the scene around the clock.

I did put together a few images in a collage-like display. Posted Image

Thanks for the update, hopefully a sense of normal will return and the business owners can begin the task of rebuilding. Thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this.

I was just down at the scene. You can now walk down Elkhorn on the north side of the street. This afternoon they hope to have one lane of traffic open on Elkhorn. A fireman said that he estimates it will take about two weeks to determine what caused it. I'll post a few images in a couple of minutes.

Heartbreaking!! This building is iconic and can be seen in many of my historical postcards of Estes Park. What a tragic thing. Hopefully the building and interior businesses can be restored after the smoke clears and existing business owners surrounding the effected area won't be hit too hard economically.

Channel 7's slideshow has some photos that appear to be aerial shots. There are a couple close to the end of the slideshow that really show the damage in perspective.

Dixie,
Thank you for posting this link of the slide show. Picture #40 and #45 really show the extent of the damage. The silver lining, if there is one, is that the fire was pretty well contained. This tragedy could have been much worse.
