You ought to point them to this thread. The fire has only damaged the Park Mall and the two stores on either side which were basically part of the same building.
I called them out on twitter as well as posted a reply to their article on their site. I would have referred them here but I'm sure they don't allow linking.

The Huffington Post's article on this reads, "Estes Park Fire Destroys Much Of The City's Main Tourism Thoroughfare"

Seems highly irresponsible of them to make that ignorant, exaggerated claim with so much on the line for Estes Park with current economic conditions. Estes Park better step up to the bat in the social media realm and combat exaggerations. This could affect tourists still in planning mode.

Just returned from downtown EP. Downtown is cordoned off by roadblocks and police personnel, as the fire departments continue to pour much water on the smoldering mall. The major roadblocks on Moraine Ave. are just north of the Donut shop. Riverside Drive is closed by the liquor store. On the east end of downtown, the main street is closed at the big intersection of 34 & 36. The 34 bypass by the Safeway and Stanley remains open. The streets are open around the other way going past the hospital and Crags lodge. For today, a 4 block circumference area around the post office and the now destroyed mall are closed to cars and pedestrians. We won't open our store in the Courtyard Shops today, even though it was unscathed and we can drive there by coming in from the 34 bypass. Heavy smell of smoke in the air throughout downtown. This too, shall pass.

I wonder about the people who don't know any better and change their plans due to thinking the whole town is burned down. I hope it doesn't play out that way. But it sure was irresponsible of them.

this could just as easily have been cnn or fox overstating the effects, just as they all jumped on the balloon boy story last week. The irresponsibility doesn't attach to a particular point of view...

And, I, too, hope that this is not widely misreported to the detriment of all of downtown businesses.

Talked to a friend who saw Tom Deleo. Tom said his shop is fine, just a bit of smoke, but he had someone come pound on his door at 6:15am telling him to get out of dodge from his place above the deli.

Thanks, Jared.

This brings up a good point - the apartments over some of the buildings downtown. (Remember Weatherbee's loft?) Some folks may have lost their residences or personal belongings in this fire, in addition to the business losses.

We need to keep all these folks and the rest of the town in our prayers.

Awww, I'm so glad to hear that Tom Deleo wasn't affected. He's such a favorite of so many people here. I feel a black cloud over my day too because of this. And I agree, Erik, yours and Richards pictures are by far the best from any of the news reports.

One more report: The smoke is nearly gone. A few small spots in the building are smoldering. I'll try to get another photo of the final scene later this evening or tomorrow. We probably won't know the full extent of the smoke and water damage to surrounding stores until sometime tomorrow. Most store owners have still not been let back in. I'll post more when I know something.

Thanks for all the pics and updates. I'm glad DeLeo's is okay, too, but sure do feel bad for all the others.

Erik, did the smoke travel as far as your shop?
