Our third night in Estes we decided we wanted pasta. My husband being the great guy he is said "you don't have to cook tonight, we'll go out" We made the mistake of trying The Dunraven. (even though they call themselves an Italian restaurant, it wasn't close) It wasn't the worst Italian food I've had (that distinction goes to Lake McDonald Lodge in Glacier NP)but it was far from what I expected. Maybe we should have had steak.

Just out of curiosity, which one did you go to - the original or the downtown one?

Yeah, I wonder...and I wonder if staffing is an issue into the fall. We've been to the downtown one several times, and enjoyed the meals a lot. The kids liked it, too. But I think I still like sitting on the outside and Moma Rosa's...and I'm looking forward to being there again, after seeing the great Scotch selection on their menu. (Is it ok to mention that?)

We were just at the Dunraven Inn last week and really enjoyed it - our 3rd time there and one of our favorite places. The Dunraven in downtown Estes and the one on the way to the YMCA are NOT related to each other - we've asked!
We were at the one near the YMCA. The meals are quite large and could be shared. Love the atmosphere - they have dollar bills stapled all over the entire waiting area with notes from different people written on the dollar bill. There are hundreds of them all over the walls and ceilings - we've put two up but can never find them. We do wish they had more bathrooms.

This may be a case of "to each his own." I've eaten at the Dunraven out by the Y before and enjoyed it, by Estes Park standards. Gsmatch, whose hobby is cooking, noted a few ways the food could have been better; but we both agreed it that it was perfectly adequate and that we would go back.
The thing is, there are very few restaurants in EP that are really outstanding. In fact, we noted on this trip that most of our favorite places to eat are places we go for breakfast. (That would be the Egg and I, Mountain Home Cafe and Molly B's, in no particular order.)
Having been out there so many times, we've adjusted our standards to the reality of the state of the restaurants and find that helps make mealtime more pleasant. If you expect a great meal, you're most likely going to be disappointed. If you accepted that you're going to get an average meal, your expectations will be met - and in some cases exceeded.
