Good one Aaron, thanks a lot. To my question of what canister will be still approved tomorrow... It sounds like it's on a one park at a time basis. If the bears in Rocky Mountain National Park figure out how to open a certain canister, then we will see the park change it's stance on which canisters are approved.

Yeah, that's the impression I'm getting, i.e. each park setting its own 'standards' regarding what's acceptable. I think the one I'm liking is the Bear Keg....haven't bought one yet, but that's the one I'm leaning towards.

Err, I'll have to keep investigating....

I know that's a grizzly, but maybe I'll keep looking in case it wasn't stregth that helped the griz get into it.

Call me crazy, but I'm almost convinced Black Bear called dibs on RMNP long before we did; let's make sure there's room out there for all of us.

Honestly? I'd never heard of a "bear canister" until very recently. Back in the day (circa 1980), I believe standard protocol was at least fifteen feet high, and no less than ten feet between the goodies and either tree. I'm impressed and maybe a little alarmed to learn how well they've come to adapt to and predict man's apparently haphazard sloppy backcountry habits.

Fantastic interview, Aaron! While Pebbles and I certainly don't plan to go full-bore Goblins Forest → Longs → below treeline by 15:00 this year, the info is very much appreciated, especially by those of us whose backcountry skills may be more than just a little rusty. Posted Image

Thank you! ~ Bamm

I think the tap would be the weak spot. They may have a short stint being bear proof. But if the bears figure it out they won't be motivated to do much harm to you
