Here is a screen shot from Google Earth of the Igloo Ed Route that we snowshoed to Lake Haiyaha this past weekend. There is also a Google Earth link that you can click on to view the route in Google Earth, so you can adjust the viewing position to your liking. I removed the final leg to the campsite though to help protect Ed's special home. The route is in blue. (For some reason, they have the Bear Lake label in the wrong place.)

Thanks Tom. I know you marked it on the map I left upstairs at the McGregor. mad.gif
Sure seems like we had a few more zigs & zags, but then I was only looking at Ice's snowshoes anyway so what would I know.

This is awesome Tom - it's great to see on a map exactly where we were.

Very cool, Tom.

Ed, is that the same as your summer route? Seems like we dropped off the nymph trail a lot quicker in the summer. Or else I'm just realizing how short the trail to nymph really is.

Yeah, it's only 100 yds. or so from Nymph.

It took me a while to get this to work correctly. For some reason I had to set Path-Properties-Altitude to something other than "clamped to ground", then set it back to "clamped to ground". Before I did that it would only fly 20,000 feet above the ground.

What is a good set of "Touring Options"? I tried 80 degree tilt, 100 meter camera range and 50 speed.

I'm very intrigued by this shortcut. And after reading all about, and determining my ability to find, the Fire Trail and the S&S cutoff, I'm curious if there are any helpful tips to make finding the jumping off point of this shortcut easier. Having hiked this trail before, I have a general idea, but any clues would be appreciated (ie, is it just before or after a bridge, etc.? Possibly a pic?)

Thanks in advance. The helpfulness of the folks here never ceases to amaze me. :peace:

I do believe this post used to be titled Igloo Ed's Winter Route. Am wondering what happened there?
I travel the same general route in summer but there is no trail to follow. There are elk trails here and there but the route also crosses streams, boulder fields and swamps with plenty of timberbashing mixed in too. The exact turn off location would only be a note in a long route description needed to go along with Tom's file.

Understood, sir. Thanks.

Most of my time spent in the park is in June, so from the sound of it just sticking to the trail would probably be the best bet. I'm clumsy enough as it is.

I doubt if you are *that* clumsy but you would spend a lot of time route finding which would be better spent on a trail to a destination you haven't been to yet.
I get a chuckle out of the tracks I see in winter on the route. It's obvious some are using the gps track and they wander left and right of the trial a lot, especially in the critical areas going through thick treed areas.
