My fiance and I really want to do a peak on our trip out to RMNP. We will be out there from 21st May -- 28th May. I would prefer to do a hike that I have never done before, too.
We were looking at Mt. Ida --heard it's pretty fun-- but I have never been out that early in the season before. Is this hike possible? We are not opposed to using snow-shoes for a hike, either, though it would be a new experience.
Will anyone suggest a summit hike that is do-able? We would be much obliged! smile1.gif

rmnp-bump2.gif For a question that I'd like answered too.

My wife and I will be arriving in the park on May 28th and are curious about the Milner Pass Mt. Ida area this early in the season.

Thanks.... caribou.gif

I'm not real familiar with those hikes and so I can say nothing with confidence. As of this week, anything over 9,000' is still in winter conditions and requires snowshoes. Even the trail from Bear to Dream Lake is still snow covered. I am also doubtful that Trail Ridge Road will be open before Memorial Day, though I could be wrong. If you plan to summit anything, I would encourage you to rent snowshoes and gaiters. On less hiked trails you may find it difficult at times to find the trail, especially in the spring with all of the melting and refreezing. If you do try those hikes, let us know how it went.

For Mt. Ida, you would definitely need snowshoes, at least for the climb up to treeline. I think its likely you would find patches of clear ground to walk on once over treeline due to the wind up there, but that is just a guess. You have 360 views most of the whole way there, but as Malok said, its still winter up there and will be for some time.
