Ok, So I got one week of school left. Still got to give and grade the exams this week and then its off to work at camp up in North Carolina. As much as I enjoy the people here and the food, I miss mountains. Only thing we got around here are the indian mounds at LSU they are about 30ft high maybe?

Hopefully this summer I will get the chance, in between sessions at camp, to get up to Portland again or RMNP. But there is one thing for certain, come Labor Day you are going to find me In RMNP.

I just can't decide what to hike. Last Labor Day weekend it rained and snowed on and off the entire weekend. I hiked up to Flattop made it almost to the post to tie up the horses, but it was snowing and the winds were blowing 50-60mph. Although I was very confortable as far as warmth was, I turned around and hiked back to Bear Lake and then went to Glacier Gorge.

Hmmm Long's Peak, Hallett, so much to choose from. I want challenge, views, and a summit. Was last Labor a fluke snow, or the norm?

When I was in Portland last month to climb Mt. Hood, there a a bad storm that prevented the climb, but the mountaineering class was good. Anyway the Eagle Creek Gorge trail was definately the highlight. At least this in NC there won't be any snow over the summer, however it can get pretty cool at night. Well off to grade papers tired.gif !

I've been there several times shortly after Labor Day and almost always have good weather. Windy yes, but otherwise good weather. I think it's a great time of year to go. It sounds like you're in pretty good shape, you should have no problem with Hallett Peak. Hallett is a great summit that you won't want to miss. Longs is much more difficult so if your looking for a challenge, you'll love Longs.

Fall weather is usually fine, though there's always a chance of snow. Generally speaking, the snow doesn't last long; but if you only have a weekend in the park, just one day is all is takes to mess up your plans. Still, I highly recommend September/early October as one of the best seasons to be in the park.

Just wondering. What company did you take the class with?

I agree with DeeCeeM! Late Sept. and/or early Oct. is an excellent time to visit Estes and RMNP!!!!! We (wife and I, and sometimes family/visitors) go every year during this time period! Atleast for the last 8 yrs. Any time is good in Rocky, ----- Fall is Excellent!!! Enjoy! smile1.gif wink2.gif peace.gif ps. The weather usualy is good but chance of snow makes it even more fun. Nine days is our usual. Can't wait for this year!!!
